Things to know about Basic Disaster Camp
Out of respect for our donor dollars, this event has been planned with an eye toward creating the most comprehensive training event possible for the least cost and the least environmental impact. You will see this demonstrated by the facilities selected and the training methodologies. By making those choices, more volunteers and employees can be trained on how to provide vital services.
Basic Disaster Camp is the first step in a series of three training weekends designed to prepare new volunteers to respond to home fires and local disasters and provide Red Cross assistance as part of our disaster team. the weekend includes the Shelter Exercise, introduction to local Disaster Action Team operations, Psychological First Aid, and the Client Assistance Workshop.
Upon completion volunteers will be eligible to be assigned to one of four on-call Disaster Action Teams (DAT) and work under the guidance of a DAT Captain. The DAT Captain is responsible for mentorship and field training. DAT typically go on one-week call rotations, although shorter rotations are possible.
Volunteers who complete the Basic Disaster Camp will also be eligible to attend one of our Specialty Disaster Camps and choose to train in up to three of the following disaster activity areas: Mass Care Feeding, Logistics, Bulk Distribution; Casework and Individual Client Services; Government Liaison and Public Affairs; Disaster Assessment; Staff Services, and more. Volunteers who complete a specialty weekend can then progress to the Leadership Disaster Camp in the Spring.
Volunteers who successfully complete Basic Disaster Camp weekend and online prerequisites will also be eligible for national deployment opportunities.

Food
Bring your lunch, as this will be a brown-bag event; you need to bring a lunch each day. We will have snacks, coffee, water, and soft drinks available and if you have a travel mug or water bottle it will help us cut down on waste.
For dinner on Saturday night there will be a Thanksgiving-themed potluck provided by the Fairbanks Red Cross volunteer team. |
Lodging
Lodging will be available at our Staff Shelter on Saturday night at the District Office warehouse. We strongly encourage all participants to spend the night at the Staff Shelter. It will help you get a better understanding of what it is like to stay in a shelter and help you gain some realistic expectations for deployment. We want our Disaster Workforce to have a good understanding of a shelter and it will help with your training. We ask clients to stay in shelters and we need to be willing to do so ourselves. Breakfast options will include oatmeal, cereal, fruit, and/or doughnuts along with coffee, milk, and juice.
The best part about this option is that it has a no-cost overnight option for participants coming from out-of-town. If you plan on spending the night, please bring a pillow, toiletries, and some bedding to be comfortable. Please note there is no shower facilities at our building. |
