Things to know about the South Central Disaster Clinic
Out of respect for our donor dollars, this event has been planned with an eye toward creating the most comprehensive training event possible for the least cost and the least environmental impact. You will see this demonstrated by the facilities selected and the training methodologies. By making those choices, more volunteers and employees can be trained on how to provide vital services.
The Disaster Clinic is a basic level clinic designed to prepare volunteers to respond to home fires and local disasters and provide Red Cross assistance as part of our disaster team. the weekend includes the Shelter Exercise, introduction to local Disaster Action Team operations, Psychological First Aid, and the Client Assistance Workshop.
Upon completion volunteers will be eligible to be assigned to one of four on-call Disaster Action Teams (DAT) and work under the guidance of a DAT Captain. The DAT Captain is responsible for mentorship and field training. DAT typically go on one-week call rotations, although shorter rotations are possible.
Volunteers who successfully complete the Disaster Clinic and online training courses will also be eligible for national deployment opportunities.

Lodging
Lodging will be available at our Staff Shelter on Saturday night at the District Office classroom on Saturday. We strongly encourage all participants to spend the night at the Staff Shelter. It will help you get a better understanding of what it is like to stay in a shelter and help you gain some realistic expectations for deployment. We want our Disaster Workforce to have a good understanding of a shelter and it will help with your training.
The best part about this option is that it has a no-cost overnight option for participants coming from out-of-town. If you plan on spending the night, please bring a pillow, toiletries, and some bedding to be comfortable. Please note there is no shower facilities at our building. |
